Your Mission Should You Choose To Accept It…

Matthew 5:14 (NIV)

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Mission Impossible has always been one of my favorite movies. The suspense is simply incredible. It has you on the edge of your seat the entire movie. And the action always starts with the phrase” Your mission, if you choose to accept it…” The mission that is offered up every time is both dangerous and adventurous. The person who accepts the mission really has no idea what they are in for at that moment. The combination of the two always makes for a great movie.

Jesus addresses a crowd in Matthew 5 and gives them… and us… our mission, should we choose to accept it.

He tells us that we are the light of the world and uses the same Hebrew word for light as Moses used to describe creation. So now our mission is directly linked to the mission of creation. To bring light to a dark world. Why would he use the word light? What does light really do?

Light is used to bring life and health. It was one of the basis of the universe. You can’t have space and time without it… It helps with the process of photosynthesis…  You can’t have plants without it. Light gives off Vitamin D which brings health to our central nervous system. It helps us to grow and become strong.

Light is also used to help bring clarity and perspective. It’s impossible to see anything without it, so we stumble our way around. Light shows us the way to what’s important in life and how to get where we want to go. It brings the insight we need to keep moving forward.

And get this… we don’t DO light. Jesus says we ARE light!

We are to bring life, health, clarity, and perspective to a dark world. And remember… it doesn’t take much light to light the darkness, when the darkness is really deep. This is our mission, if we choose to accept it.

Father I pray that you use me to be a light in a dark world. May the words I speak bring life, health, clarity and perspective to someone who needs it. Use me today to bring glory to your name. I accept your mission.
